Suffolk County Issues Fire Warning for All County Parks

Extended Drought and Decreasing Humidity Will Increase Risk

Hauppauge, NY— Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy today announced that a fire warning has been issued for all County parklands and public lands within Suffolk.

"Many in the media and in the fire service community have taken note of the ten-year anniversary of the Pine Barrens brush fires, and it is important to note that similar conditions exist right now that could very easily escalate the smallest of fires into an out-of-control inferno," Levy said.

Brush and parklands are extremely dry due to a drought which has lasted for more than 50 days, and County officials noted that an expected drop in humidity this week will increase the risk of fire in parklands.

Suffolk issued the warning in cooperation with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Pine Barrens Wildfire Task Force and the County's Parks and Fire, Rescue departments.

Only fires in approved containers will be allowed in Suffolk parks until further notice. Residents should also not throw cigarette butts on the ground or out car windows.

Levy urged residents to report a fire or any suspicious activity in the parklands by calling 911 or the Suffolk County Park Police at 631-854-1422.
