Statement of County Executive Steve Levy in Response to US Department of Homeland Security Fact Sheet on Plum Island Facility

Hauppauge, NY –In response to a news release and fact sheet issued today by the United States Department of Homeland Security announcing plans to replace the Plum Island Animal Disease Center, County Executive Steve Levy has joined with Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Congressman Timothy Bishop in calling upon the federal government to involve local and state officials in its plans for this important facility.

Levy said that he was dismayed by the lack of notification by the department of its intentions to conduct a "requirements analysis process" to replace the Plum Island facility, particularly in light of recent assurances made by the Department to consult with New York's representatives on Plum Island's future.

Levy urged the Department of Homeland Security to meet with New York's federal, state and local representatives to make clear its intentions for the Plum Island facility and to garner local input. He said he would be working with Senator Clinton and Congressman Bishop to facilitate such a meeting.
